Tisha B’Av and the 72 Hour Cease-Fire

Yesterday, 4 August 2014, at sunset, The House of Israel began observing Tisha B’Av – the 24 hour Fast in memory of the destruction of our temple.  Our Rabbis teach that the Temple was destroyed because of baseless hatred.

This morning, 5 August 2014 at 8:00 a.m., The State of Israel and Hamas-Gaza began the Egyptian brokered 72 hour cease-fire.

Last night when I heard the news of the upcoming cease-fire, I remembered that Albert Einstein said: “Coincidence is G-d’s way of remaining anonymous.”

Part of the lesson for Tisha B’Av teaches that baseless hatred ultimately destroyed all that we had built in the Land, even G-d’s Holy Temple was not exempt from that destruction.

I wonder, did Prime Minister Mr. Netanyahu, along with the rest of The House of Israel, read The Book of Eicha/Lamentations last night?

This morning the 10:00 top of the hour news reported: “Some 300 trucks are expected to enter the Gaza Strip via Kerem Shalom (Vineyard of Peace) Crossing. Ten will be carrying medical equipment.” That was it. No further comment or statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

I do believe that Prime Minister Mr. Netanyahu and his staff are busy getting ready to negotiate and that is why there was no comment or statement from his office. But just in case they are planning to negotiate along his standard lines and current path here is my advice:

Prime Minister Mr. Netanyahu, get thee to the negotiating table with fairness on your heart and mind! On behalf of the Israeli People, please negotiate with the PA and Hamas. Sir, them and us…we have the same Patriarch, Abraham.  We are cousins – family. Please Sir, do remember Beresheet/Genesis 13:8-9: “So Abram said to Lot, ‘Let us not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives. Is not the whole land before you? Let us part company. If you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left.'” Granted, Mr. Prime Minister, Sir, quite a bit of time has gone by since those words between Abram and Lot, G-d has blessed us with the State of Israel. I understand that what you can offer the PA and Hamas is limited.  But really, Sir, I know you can do better than you have been doing.

Prime Minister Mr. Netanyahu, get thee to the negotiating table with honesty on your heart and mind! Negotiate fairly with them, for them and for us. Start by quoting Isaiah 2:4: “He will judge between nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.” …And then say: “For every truck load of food, medicine and building materials that we send in, send that truck back full of missiles, guns, rockets and weapons. Let us build two states. One for your people, your nation, Palestine, and one for my people, my nation, Israel.”

Prime Minister Mr. Netanyahu, get thee to the negotiating table with justice on your heart and mind! Do better than you have done during these days of war. Sir, with all due respect, what you have named “Operation Brother’s Keeper” and “Operation Protective Edge,” these are not two separate operations, they are one war. In fact, I have read that there are those who believe that this is another segment in our long existential war for independence. Sir, I must tell you true, because I fear you haven’t realized it: this current war has not brought us peace and it will not bring us peace. For heaven’s sake, Sir, it isn’t even near to bringing us a real sense of security!

Prime Minister Mr. Netanyahu, get thee to the negotiating table and remember that G-d and Israel are with you. Please do negotiate with fairness, honesty and justice on your heart and mind. Do right, so that we all, the Palestinians and Israelis alike, may live in peace and security, each in their own Land.  …because truly Sir, your current path is killing us…
